Aim for A Strong High School Finish

Why a strong finish matters

Congratulations, Seniors -- you are on the road to college this fall!

Even if final exams are behind you, it is important to know that your future college expects you to have maintained your same level of academic achievement as demonstrated prior to admission. Admission could be rescinded in serious cases of drops in performance.

Note that some colleges will care greatly if there is a drop in grades, while others view a slight grade drop as having no impact on final admission.

Colleges may have varying policies regarding rescinding admissions, but a strong senior year finish benefits you in multiple ways, setting you up for success in college:

  • College-Ready Skills: By keeping your study skills sharp and mastering time management now, you'll be a total pro when you get to college. Think of it as getting a head start!
  • Maintain a Strong Transcript: Consistent good grades enhance your transcript, potentially impacting future scholarship opportunities.

Beyond Admission: The Bigger Picture

  • Minimized Risk: While some colleges might rescind offers for significant grade drops, consistently strong performance minimizes that risk.
  • Merit Scholarship Impact: Diminished grades can affect merit scholarship awards, so maintaining good standing protects your financial aid package.
  • Heads Up for Top Schools: Super selective colleges might be stricter about senior year grades, so be extra aware if that's where you're headed.

Examples of College Policies

  • USC: The University of Southern California's policy emphasizes maintaining academic achievement. They want to see you keep up the good work, and a major grade drop might not fly.
  • UC Davis: Outlines the expectation of continued satisfactory academic performance and consistency in high school course registration prior to admission.
  • Washington State University: Focuses on maintaining academic integrity as well as consistent grades.

The University of Michigan has blogged on this topic, addressing the challenge of senioritis and how to combat it.

Facing a Low Grade? Take Action!

  • Don't Panic: Take a deep breath and assess the situation.
  • Develop a Plan: Explore options to improve your performance in the class. Can you seek extra help from teachers or tutors?

Communication is Key

  • Talk it Out: If the grade sticks, reach out to the college and explain what happened. Maybe you can take a summer class to make it up?
  • Proactive Approach: The best strategy is consistent effort throughout the year to avoid last-minute challenges.

The Best Plan?

Remember, colleges want you to succeed! By giving your best now, you'll be setting yourself up for an amazing college experience. You got this, Seniors!
