Touring Colleges in the Summer

Making the most of campus visits in the "off season"

Touring colleges in the summer can be a great way for high school students to get a feel for different campuses and find the right fit for their future education. Here's some good advice to make the most of your college tours during the summer:

  1. Plan ahead: Research the colleges you want to visit and schedule your tours in advance. Check the colleges' websites for available tour times and register online if required.
  2. Visit a variety of schools: Tour both large and small, urban and rural, public and private colleges to get a diverse perspective on different campuses and their offerings.
  3. Take a guided tour: Participate in official campus tours led by student guides. They can provide valuable insights into campus life, academics, and student experiences.
  4. Attend information sessions: Many colleges offer information sessions alongside tours. These sessions often provide deeper insights into the college's programs, admission process, financial aid, and more. If you do not have time for both a tour and an info session, prioritize the tour!
  5. Take notes and pictures: Bring a notebook or use your smartphone to jot down important details and take pictures of key areas to help you remember each campus later.
  6. Ask questions: Don't hesitate to ask questions during the tour or information sessions. Inquire about majors, extracurricular activities, support services, and anything else that's important to you.
  7. Talk to current students: If possible, strike up conversations with current students during your visit. They can provide candid insights into the college's atmosphere and culture. What made them choose this college?  Would they choose it again if they had a second opportunity to apply to college?
  8. Explore the surrounding area: Take some time to explore the town or city where the college is located. Consider if the environment suits your lifestyle and preferences. College life extends beyond the campus gates!
  9. Check out the facilities: Visit the library, dorms, classrooms, and any other facilities that interest you to assess their quality and suitability. Can you picture yourself happy and engaged in these spaces?
  10. Attend summer events: Some colleges host special events or programs during the summer for prospective students. Consider attending these if available.
  11. Be open-minded: Keep an open mind and try to see beyond any initial impressions. Each college has its unique strengths and offerings.
  12. Take breaks and stay hydrated: College tours can be physically demanding, especially in the summer heat. Stay hydrated and take breaks to rest and recharge.
  13. Compare and contrast: After visiting multiple colleges, make a list of pros and cons for each institution to help you make an informed decision.
  14. Discuss with family or mentors: Share your experiences and thoughts with your family or mentors to gain valuable insights and different perspectives.
  15. Trust your instincts: In the end, trust your gut feeling about each college. Consider which environment feels right for you and aligns with your academic and personal goals.  Ask yourself:  Do I see myself here, learning and living over the next four years?

Remember that college tours are an opportunity to gather information and get a sense of the campus environment. Take your time in making a decision and choose a college that aligns with your interests and aspirations. Good luck with your college search!
